A Dialogue Between Art and Ocean: Peanut’s Creative Perspective
This time we’re excited to share insights from one of our talented artists, Peanut.
Peanut is renowned for her unique style, with works that are relaxed, humorous, and rich in Hong Kong characteristics. Her creative philosophy is “to draw illustrations that belong to Hong Kong.” As another talented member of the Hong Kong Society of Illustrators (HKSI), Peanut brings 3 marine creature designs full of personality to this series.
In her interview, Peanut views the ocean as a beautiful and mysterious source of inspiration, while recognizing its struggle with human-induced threats. She believes art can play a crucial role in raising awareness about ocean conservation by evoking emotions and creating connections.
Question: As an artist/illustrator, have the ocean and marine life ever been a source of inspiration or insight for your creative work?
Answer: Ocean is beautiful, wise, powerful, and mysterious. It is a presence that nurtures life while embracing death. Brings countless possibilities for creation.
Question: What is your understanding of the threats and damage being done to marine ecosystems?
Answer: Ocean is struggling with the pressures from human waste and climate change. Various forms of pollution such as plastic waste, chemical pollutants, oil spills, etc. While climate change is rising the sea temperatures and sea level rise. All of them as a result disrupt the delicate balance of marine ecosystems. Not only harming marine life, but also all creatures on earth.
Question: What role do you think art and artists can play in raising public awareness about ocean conservation?
Answer: Art has the unique ability to evoke emotions, spark conversations, and create a profound connection between individuals and the environment. Artists can use their works to provide visual stimulation to the audience and evoke empathy and concern through visual storytelling. This, in turn, encourages individuals to reflect on their own relationship with the marine environment.
Question: How would you utilize your unique artistic form to convey the theme of ocean conservation?
Answer: In this project, I combined the marine environment affected by plastics waste together with the patterns of blue-and-white porcelain, represented in a doodle style. Both subjects are beautiful yet fragile. The intention is to raise awareness among the public about appreciating the beauty of tradition and the importance of protecting the marine environment.
Environmental Impact
Remember, if we sell out this NFT series, we’ll donate $1,000 (or equivalent in MATIC) to A Plastic Ocean Foundation (APO). This donation will support APO’s “Coral Guard Initiative”, helping to restore coral habitats in Hong Kong.
